Channel Nine learned two small things and one big thing last week. The smalls: Gordon Ramsay was a flash in the pan (the audience for his latest Kitchen Nightmares was down half a million on his pre-Olympic figures, apparently because Nine had overstuffed the viewers, and in the process, stuffed itself); and the success of Seven's City Homicide cannot be generalised into a fad for Australian cop shows (Nine's The Strip was down 200,000 from its debut).
The big: Nine will not be making a comeback this year, because Seven will have the largest audience share when the ratings race ends in November. Nine's audience may be up a bit, but it will not be The One.
The prime time shares last week were Seven 29.9 per cent, Nine 25.4, Ten 20.6 per cent, ABC 18.9, and SBS 5.3. Seven's top performers were Packed To The Rafters and Find My Family. Nine's only show in the top ten was Two and a Half Men.
Ten had high hopes for the "re-imagining'' of the 80s teen favourite 90210 but managed only 837,000 (because there was not enough Shannen Doherty) but felt flushed with success when Kenny's World pulled 1.1 million. Taken Out is averaging 632,000 a night, which is apparently not bad enough to cause Ten to send it to Yasminland.
The ABC was going gangbusters with Spicks and Specks, Midsomer Murders, and the Four Corners September 11 conspiracy theory special. SBS scored with Top Gear (887,000) and Mythbusters (422,000), while Pay TV's top performers were NRL: Storm vs Rabbitohs (Fox Sports 2) 227,000; Project Runway Australia (Arena) 223,000; The Simpsons (Fox 8) 210,000 and Family Guy (Fox 8) 201,000.
Nine reasserted itself on Sunday, getting 29.8 per cent of the prime time audience to Seven's 22.5, with the help of 60 Minutes, a new gardening show and Underbelly's first (legal) showing in Melbourne.
